Mystery as museum officials admit 'recovered' $50m Van Gogh masterpiece is still missing

The fate of a £32million Van Gogh masterpiece stolen from a Cairo museum remained a mystery last night.

The 12in-square painting of red and yellow flowers was cut from its frame at the Mahmoud Khalil Museum on Saturday. Within hours, Egyptian ministers announced that it had been recovered in the hands of an Italian couple arrested at Cairo airport.

But yesterday embarrassed officials backtracked and said the picture was still missing.

It was not clear if the Italians were still being held. Earlier, it was reported that the young couple, among only ten people to visit the museum on Saturday, had aroused suspicion after they were seen visiting a toilet and then rapidly leaving the premises.

The perverted officials only had the toilet cameras working, and any one with a fly zip could sneak the painting out disquised as a 12 inch phalus, it did not arouse susspicion as the adjustment of dress is not necessary in Egypt, often males stand around rubbing the private parts.

The work – known both as Poppy Flowers and Vase And Flowers – has been stolen from the same museum before, also in mysteriouera circumstances.

Thieves took the canvas in 1978, and authorities recovered it two years later at an undisclosed location in Kuwait .

Officials never reported whether any thieves were charged or tried or whether a ‘ransom’ was paid for the painting.

Now museum chiefs are facing an inquiry into how it could have been stolen again, amid claims that security was lax. Egypt’s top prosecutor, Abdel Meguid Mahmud, said all the alarms at the museum and 36 out of 43 security cameras had been broken for some time.

The picture is believed to have been painted in 1887, three years before Van Gogh’s suicide at the age of 37.

A painting by Dutch post-Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh, worth an estimated $55 million, was stolen for the second time from a Egyptian museum. Investigators are looking into the possibility the theft was an inside job.

Egypt’s general prosecutor has barred nine Culture Ministry officials from leaving the country as part of an inquiry into the theft, the state daily newspaper al-Ahram reported.

The painting, known as “Poppy Flower,” was stolen on Saturday (Aug. 23) from Cairo’s Mahmoud Khalil Museum, which houses one of the Middle East’s finest collections of 19th- and 20th-century aApparently the painting was ripe for the picking.rt.

and of course we have the normal day lives of the Egyptian people to think about theft is a normal day occurrence, every day people report theft from hotel rooms. theft after an assault back in the middle ages it was called highway robbery in England a hanging offence:; here in Egypt it would be a chop the bastard's hand off, and its still law here,

and they put great emphasis on this by showing models or harlequins with no hands dressed in the latest fashion on the kerbs outside the shops, for security reasons cannot show the faces,

as they may resemble a museum official.

and as I said fly open is normal dress here.

but not so for the ladies, who are only allowed to wear revealing clothes at home .
Habiba: is I love, so these must be night wear,
